A Life of Service to Science and Ethics—The Mascia Family Memorial Science Endowed Scholarship in Memory of Peter Nicholas Mascia, Class of 1972
Dr. Peter Nicholas Mascia, Ph.D., Class of 1972, was a plant geneticist who came from a long line of medical professionals—his great-grandfather was a pharmacist, his grandfather a chemist, and his father an M.D. He studied with the renowned Dr. Barbara Stahl at Saint Anselm. But like all Saint Anselm students, he was thoroughly grounded in the humanities and the liberal arts.
After graduate study at the University of Iowa, he eventually joined Ceres Corp. where he worked on genetically modified crops and plant products for use in biofuel, with a special dedication to ethical research, behavior, and production.
After his untimely death in May 2009, at the age of 58, his family established an endowed scholarship fund on the Hilltop. The fund provides scholarship assistance to Saint Anselm College students majoring in chemistry or biology, in the ethical, humanitarian spirit of Dr. Peter Mascia ’72. The fund has received contributions from family, friends, and alumni of the college who knew Peter or who share his desire to employ cutting-edge science to make the world a better place for all.
